महानिर्वाण-तन्त्रम्       mahānirvāṇa-tantram - chapter-8, verse-111

राजन्यानाञ्च सद्वृत्तं संग्रामो भूमिशासनम् ।
अत्राशक्तौ वणिग्वृत्तं शूद्रवृत्तमथाश्रयेत् ॥१११॥
111. rājanyānāñca sadvṛttaṁ saṁgrāmo bhūmiśāsanam ,
atrāśaktau vaṇigvṛttaṁ śūdravṛttamathāśrayet.

atra aśaktau vaṇigvṛttam śūdravṛttam atha āśrayet

111. For kṣatriyas, the proper conduct consists of warfare and ruling the land, but in times of inability, one may resort to the livelihood of merchants, and thereafter to that of śūdras.
